Our Translators
The key to a good translation is matching the content and subject-matter of your document with a professional translator with appropriate experience. This is where we come in. With almost 15 years of experience in the translation business, our translation services in Nottingham have had time to build an extensive database of professional mother-tongue translators and in-country partners offering a very wide variety of subject-specialisms. Our translators all have at least 3 years experience as full-time professional translators. Although many of them are accredited members of the UK and European translator associations, this is not a guarantee of acceptance onto our database. All new applicants are asked to carry out a series of translation tests and are then trialled for 6 months with different types of assignment.
Here are brief biographical details of a small cross-section of our translators:
| NORIKO - ENGLISH INTO JAPANESE |
Since graduating from Tama Art University in Tokyo, Noriko has worked as a full-time freelance translator in England for more than 10 years following 1 year working in a translation agency in Tokyo. She specialises in technical translation, subjects such as IT (software localisation and hardware), automotive, engineering, and medical equipment manuals. She also covers general subjects such as art, tourism and business documentation.

Chan's translation capabilities cover marketing and creative writing- particularly relevant with the growing EU-China trading relationship, in which a professional and culturally sensitive image is crucial to success. Chan makes use of translation memory tools such as TRADOS to support her high-volume translation projects.

| KATHARINA - ENGLISH INTO GERMAN |
Katharina was born and brought up in Germany. After studying English, she moved to the UK and worked in various City of London banking roles, an experience which lends extra sensitivity to her financial translation work. Katharina enjoys the wide variety of translation work which AST sends her way. She retains strong links to Germany, often visiting family there and has a passion for German literature.

| ISABEL - GERMAN INTO ENGLISH |
Isabel studied German, Russian and French at Cambridge University, including a most enjoyable year spent in Austria. She then gained a Diploma in Translation before starting work as a linguist at GCHQ, the Government Communications HQ. Following a career break to look after her children, Isabel began to work from home as a freelance translator, concentrating on translating German into English. She has worked for AST regularily since 1998. While much of her work is in the fields of business, marketing and publicity, Isabel also translates technical material.

| DAVID - ITALIAN AND PORTUGUESE INTO ENGLISH |
After studying French and Italian at Cambridge University, David travelled to Brazil where he learned Portuguese and found a job as an in-house translator on a financial newspaper. Six years later he returned to the UK and sat the Institute of Linguists' Diploma in Translation exam from Portuguese into English, for which he received the Richard Lewis trophy. Specialist areas include law, software and tractors, and he recently translated texts for a new book on Brazilian footballing legend Pelé.

| CALINKA - ENGLISH AND FRENCH INTO GERMAN |
Calinka specialised in mechanical and electrical engineering as part of her degree in applied linguistics from the University of Hildesheim in Germany. This gives her the perfect background for the translation of operating instructions, technical specifications, brochures and technology-based marketing documents. Calinka has been a translator for more than 15 years and says: "I’ve always felt very confident due to my early technical specialisation and the fact that AST assigns me to specific regular clients, which gives me even more insight into all the little details making all the difference."

| SANDRINE - ENGLISH INTO FRENCH |
Sandrine graduated in France in 1993 with a Master's Degree in Foreign Applied Languages and International Commerce, giving her an ideal background for specialising in commercial and marketing texts. After graduation, she spent 7 years in the UK, working for 4 years as an in-house translator for 2 translation companies, and then 3 years as a freelancer. Sandrine moved back to France in 2002 and carried on with freelancing for AST and acquiring new clients along the way.
